Identifying and Treating a Poisonous Spider Bite

In Arizona, spending time outdoors happens almost year-round; exploring the state by bike riding or walking trails, outdoor concerts, or just relaxing by the pool.  Being outside means being exposed to some creepy crawly friends.  There are two very well known poisonous spiders that dwell here; the Black Widow and Brown Recluse (Arizona Brown) Spider.  The bites of either of these can end in fatality if left untreated.  It is very important to learn how to identify the spider and recognize any symptoms.

Seek medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms from a poisonous spider bite.

Black Widow Spider Bite

The female black widow spider has a very powerful venom.  It has been found to be 15 time more-stronger than the bite of a rattlesnake.  If bit by a black widow, there are two consistent and easily identifiable symptoms:  site of bite will have two small fang marks and then immediately there will be a noticeable and sharp pain that will become red and swollen.

If neither of these things catch your eye, but you begin to experience muscle cramps, chills, fever, nausea and severe body pain, call your doctor right away.  There is a protein in their venom that will attack the nervous system.  Every person will react differently to a bite, and usually life-threatening reactions are only ever seen in children and the elderly.  AZ Pest Control Mesa

Brown Recluse (Arizona Brown) Spider

The bite of this spider doesn’t always hurt or show immediate symptoms.  This makes a bite from a Brown Recluse much more difficult to identify.  Symptoms include red and swollen skin around the bite, a blister may develop.  The area will be itchy and within one week of the bite, a sore or ulcer may develop.  This spider has a necrotic bite.  This means that the bite can cause severe damage to the skin and surrounding tissue.  It can take a while for it to heal.  There have been cases where headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, join stiffness, and fever were present. AZ Pest Control Mesa
