BLACK WIDOW SPIDER

Just when you thought Spider’s couldn’t get any scarier…..you see (like I did) an awfully large spider dangling from your garage door.  Yep, you guessed it…….a Black Widow.

In North America, the black widow spider is the most poisonous there is---but not all black widows are poisonous!  Just the adult females are the ones who carry the nasty venom.

The female is easy to spot, if you dare get that close!  She will have a red hourglass shape on the underneath part of her abdomen.  Her body is shiny black, and will even have different types of red marking on the top of her abdomen---how many or what kind just depends on the species.  There are 5 different species of Black Widow Spiders in North America.

The average size of a black widow fully grown is anywhere from 8-10 mm.  The female black widow can lay up to 400 eggs at a time!!!  But, black widows are also cannibals, so…..they will eat each other.  The female black widow has a bad reputation for wanting to eat her mate….and she will, because she mistakes him for a meal! Arizona Fountain Hills Pest Control

The silk these spiders can spin is known to be the strongest of all silk.  A black widows web is not pretty---instead, it will look like thick jumbles.  But the webs work and will catch beetles, flies, grasshoppers, moths, and other spiders.

Even though these spiders are scary, they too have enemies.  There are certain Wasps that can sting and paralyze the black widow before they eat it.  The black widow is also a Praying Mantis’s favorite meal!  Birds can eat black widows---but may endure an upset stomach after eating her poisons. Arizona Fountain Hills Pest Control
