Weird But True: Strange Facts About Occasional Invader Pests
If you are a homeowner you are most likely familiar with common household pests like cockroaches, ants, mice, etc. There is an exclusive group of insect intruders that people in the pest world refer to as “occasional invaders”. These are the “drop in” guests. They come with their own bizarre, fun, and TRUE facts!
Boxelder Bugs
These guys get their name because they are often found on and around a boxelder tree. They are found in the western states but also can be found from eastern Canada all throughout the eastern US. They are a nuisance pest from fall through early spring. Entomologists have observed these bugs and they prefer to develop on and feed on the leaves, flowers and seeds of female boxelder trees. They enter homes usually in droves and can be alarming, but they do not reproduce while they over-winter in your home!
House Centipedes
These guys surely have been seen scurrying in and out of the shower and bathroom sinks drains in your home. Their legs make them look menacing, and how many legs they have actually is a huge range! Anywhere from 15-177 pairs! Centipedes always have an odd number of pairs of legs! A centipede’s front legs aren’t made for walking, but actually form into venomous fangs. They inject venom and paralyze their prey. These “leg fangs” are unique to centipedes. Eco-Friendly Pest Control near Me Fountain Hills AZ
Earwigs
These creepy crawlers got their name from a myth that they crawl into sleeping people’s ears and tunnel into their brains. So not true. They are not dangerous to humans, but can look alarming. They live off of dead plant and animal matter and some will eat living plants and fruits. There are 25 types of earwig species in the US. Male earwigs find mates by using their sense of smell. Once coupled with a female, the male uses his long cerci (pincers) to attach himself to her. They can stay in the mating position for hours. Eco-Friendly Pest Control near Me Fountain Hills AZ
