All About Fire Ants
Fire Ants are reddish in color, and range from 1.6 millimeters to 5 millimeters in length. Fire Ants are usually found in the ground, and sometimes a nest can be seen as a mound from 61 cm in diameter and 18 cm in height. Really large colonies can have up to 250,000 workers---who are extremely active and aggressive. If they are disturbed, they can sting repeatedly.
Fire Ants are omnivorous---they love meats, grease, and sweet things! Omnivorous means that they will feed on just about anything! Animal or vegetable----they aren’t too picky! Fire Ant workers will eat earthworms, ticks, spiders, arthropod eggs, honeydew, and even plant seeds. The young and newborn of birds, rodents and calves are also a favorite of the fire ants. Most of the time, fire ants consume dead animals----whether they are what killed it, or something else did. They aren’t picky about that.
The larvae of fire ants are fed by the worker adults and they eat only liquid until their third larval instar is complete. Once they reach the fourth instar larvae, they are able to digest solid food. Fire Ant Problem Fountain Hills AZ
It takes around 30 days for an ant to go from egg to adult. Worker ants can live up to around 180 days, where the queen can live anywhere from two to six years.
One of the most common signs of a fire ant infestation is the ant activity---but other signs can be the sandy earth mound that pops up, most commonly after a recent rainfall. Or another? Complaints of someone being stung by ants. Fire Ant Problem Fountain Hills AZ
