Identifying & Controlling Fleas
There is nothing quite like seeing a flea on your pet or in your home that will make you squirm just a bit. Recently, my labradoodle was around 2 other dogs (at my home) for about a week. Come to find out, those other dogs had fleas……..so, now….you guessed it! We are dealing with fleas on our pet, and in our yard.
Once you have seen a flea, they are very easy to identify. The adults do not have wings, and they are roughly 2.5 mm long. Their bodies are a red/brown color and their bodies are covered with microscopic hair. This hair is compressed and it allows them to move easily through animal fur.
The adults are what will draw blood from whatever host they are living on. Fleas LOVE hairy animals like dogs, cats, rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice and any other animal with quite a bit of fur. Fleas do not have wings, but they are capable of jumping quite far.
Fleas lay eggs, and these eggs do not attach to the host. The eggs will hatch on the ground, in the rugs, carpet…..bedding….cracks in the floor……pretty much anywhere! If the eggs hatch, it will happen in roughly 2 days. Flea Control Mesa AZ
If you have fleas in the home, for them to survive, they need a blood meal from a host. So the fleas come in the home most of the time through pets or other mammal hosts. Fleas can become a major problem indoors when the host they were feeding on, isn’t around anymore. They will then focus their feedings on any other hosts that resides in the home. For example, if the fleas were feeding on a mouse in the home……and the mouse is trapped and removed, they will then find a new host, your pet….or you!
Sealing cracks, gaps, and holes to keep rodents or other potential hosts from getting into the home is a great indirect way to keep the fleas outside. But the most effective way to keep fleas from getting inside the home is to eliminate them outside and also their outdoor host. Also, using an area-wide flea control chemical and a veterinarian approved flea control product on your pet. Flea Control Mesa AZ
