Diamondback Rattlesnake
Appearance:
This snake, the Diamondback Rattlesnake is the largest venomous snake in North America. They can grow to be eight feet long and weigh up to 10 pounds. Easily recognizable with their black or brown diamonds patterned all down their body and outlines in a light shade of yellow. This snake has a series of hollow segments at the end of the tail. This is what creates a rattle when shaken vigorously. Diamondbacks also have two heat sensing pits located between their nostrils and eyes. This is what allows them to strike prey even when they cannot see well.
Habitat & Behavior:
In the United States you will find three species of diamondback rattlesnakes. They are found in the southern, southwestern, and western states and even in some parts of Mexico. They live anywhere that has thick brush or vegetation. They ambush their prey and also need a great bit of ground cover in order to sneak up on their prey. They like dry areas and also rocky landscape. You can also find them curled near fallen trees and under logs.
Even though they do have a reputation, they are not overly aggressive and the rattle is more of a warning than a sign that they are about to strike. If a diamondback can’t get away from a predator, it will coil and shake its tail. When there is no longer a threat, it will stop shaking. Mesa AZ Snake Removal
Female snakes keep their eggs inside their bodies, and then give birth to live young of ten or more. Gestation time is between six and seven months. Infant rattlesnakes are independent when born. They do not have a rattle, just a small nub. Mesa AZ Snake Removal
