What To Do When Your Pet Is Stung By A Scorpion
In the United States, the greatest cause for concern with Scorpions is the Bark Scorpion. This small creature is extremely poisonous and it’s sting pack’s a huge punch. The venom in its tail can kill. In Arizona, this would be the worst case scenario if you suspect your pet was stung by a scorpion. A scorpion sting of any kind is usually painful, and within 24 hours after being stung by a “not so poisonous scorpion”, pets are usually on the mend. However, this is not the case if stung by an Arizona Bark Scorpion. The pain will become much worse.
Bring your fuzzy friend to the vet or to an animal hospital if he or she is showing these types of symptoms: Paralysis, labored or difficulty breathing, swelling, skin inflammation, drooling, or they collapse. These signs will show themselves about 10-15 minutes after being stung. If your pet does not receive medical attention, the chances of them living, are slim.
For stings that occur by the not-so-venomous scorpions, there are first aid measures that you as a pet owner can take to help with pain and swelling. Here are some tips! Phoenix Scorpion Pest Control AZ
- Apply a thick paste of baking soda and water to the area. This is a home remedy. The paste needs to be applied to the skin to help increase effectiveness. Part the fur as much as possible.
- Restrict your pets movements. When your cat or dog moves, it will increase their heart rate which increases the circulation….and this further spreads the venom into the body much more quickly. Encourage your pet to lay down---put then in a cage if need be.
- Use a cone collar on your pet. Any animal will want to nip/lick/scratch the injury. But doing this, only encourages the venom to spread faster. Not only is that an issue, but gnawing or scratching on a injured site could result in infection. Phoenix Scorpion Pest Control AZ
