Snake Bites
Around 7000 venomous snake bite cases happen, or at least are reported, every year in the United States. Being bit from a venomous snake is rarely deadly. Around 6 fatalities are reported every year. With that being said, a snake bite should always be treated as a medical emergency.
A bite from a harmless snake can even be serious. A bite can still lead to an allergic reaction or infection. Being bit by a venomous snake can produce all sorts of symptoms including pain and swelling around the bite, convulsions, nausea, and even paralysis.
There are some first aid steps you can take if a bite occurs. These include:
- Cleaning the wound
- Remain Calm
- Immobilize the affected area
- Get to a medical facility immediately for treatment
If a venomous bite is treated in time, the outlook for recovery is good.

Most snakes in the United States are no venomous, but several types do contain venom. In the US, all of the venomous snakes (except the coral snake) are called Pit Vipers. The Pit Viper are distinguishable by a very noticeable depression between the eye and nostril. This is where the heat sensing area is for the snake. All pit vipers have a triangular head, but not all snakes with a triangular head are venomous.
