Biting Insects, Part 2
Ticks
Ticks are a type of biting pest that is known to suck the blood of its host. Ticks are arachnids, not insects! But most people believe they are insects. The most common ticks are Dog Ticks, Blacklegged Deer Ticks, Lone Star Ticks and Rocky Mountain Wood Ticks. A Tick’s color varies depending on species, but almost all adult ticks are flat, oval shaped and smaller than a sunflower seed. That is, unless they have just had a blood meal.
They are often found near the woods or other vegetated areas. They bite but also carry diseases like Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Anaplasmosis and a variety of other. If you have just spent the day outdoors, make sure you inspect yourself carefully. If you find a tick, remove it with a slow and steady pull.
A unique fact about ticks: A blacklegged deer tick can live as long as 200 days without food or water!
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs received their name because of their habit of hiding near beds. This is what allows them to feed on humans while they sleep. An adult bed bug is about ¼ inch long. They are red/brown and a flat oval when they have not eaten. They become swollen and elongated after a blood meal.
These insects are excellent hitchhikers and can hide in luggage, purses, laptop cases and so many other personal belongings. Their goal is to find a human food supply. They are often found in very close proximity to bedding and mattresses but also will hide behind baseboards, electrical switch plates, picture frames, wallpaper…pretty much anywhere inside the home, a car, bus, hotel, college dorm, you name it! They bite humans, especially on the legs and arms. They do not transmit diseases. The bite turns into an itchy welt. Often times people will develop an allergic reaction to the bed bug’s saliva. The bed bug uses it as a numbing agent.
A unique fact about Bed Bugs: They can ingest seven times their weight in blood. This is like a male human drinking 120 gallons of liquid. Top Pest Control Company Fountain Hills AZ
