Common Questions about Ants
Have you seen an abundance of ants near, around, or in your home? Are you worried you might have a problem? Sadly, you are not alone! Ants…..even winged ants are fairly common. Sometimes seeing a winged ant indicates there is a problem, other times, it doesn’t. It really depends on what species of ant you are seeing, and what the season is. Below are some of the most common questions and answers when it comes to winged-flying ants!
Why do some ants have wings? Why don’t they all?
Carpenter ants and termites (termites are not really ants) that have wings and are seen flying are reproductive males or queens of a colony. These are the only ones in the ant colony that can reproduce. When ants or termites mate, they swarm. The males will then die after they have fulfilled their purpose. The queens will then drop their wings to go find a nesting site. So if you happen to spot something that looks like an ant and it has wings, it is most likely getting ready to add to the population!
I see ants within wing in my house. Should I be worried?
If you see a sudden appearance of swarming ants or termites in flight—-this is not a good sign. This is usually one of the first signs of an indoor infestation.
If you see this during the winter, and you have seen more than one, there is a strong likelihood that there is a carpenter nest somewhere within the structure of the home. ant exterminator phoenix az
Should I be worried if I see flying ants in my home during the summer months?
Depends. If you happen to see a winged ant (or two) during the summer months, this isn’t a for sure sign that there is a problem. Ants that fly can come through any opening; a window, door, etc. It will most likely die before it finds a place to nest. Ants are not active outdoors during the winter months, so if you see a flying any inside in the winter time, then there is a problem. ant exterminator phoenix az
